travel north america united states hawaii the island of hawaii hakalau beach park

Hakalau was once a thriving, multi-ethnic sugarcane plantation town, home to the Hakalau Plantation Company.
In Hakalau gulch, we took a steep driveway down to what is now Hakalau Beach Park used by local fishermen and surfers.
When we were there in 2011, there were still a lot of old remnants from the sugar plant.
Some more recent photos I have seen seem to indicate that much of the plant ruins have been removed since.
We had the park to ourselves and I enjoyed seeing the ruins of the plantation plant.
